CHAPTER NINE

That night Henry didn’t get much sleep, but when they did eventually drift off into a comfortable doze, the sun – unseen because of the raging blizzard – was just beginning to rise.

Although the wind had died a little, the snow was still falling heavily and, as Henry opened the flap of their makeshift door, all he could see was a wall of white.

He closed the flap and turned to look at the sleeping face of Mint: she had the face of an angel, he thought, as he stared at her flawless complexion.

Her eyes opened and instantly she smiled up at his face. Lifting her right hand, she stroked his cheek; there was no need for words.

Even with one arm, their lovemaking had been the best thing Henry had ever experienced and the thoughts of the previous night ran around his head like a loose cannonball as he leant forward and kissed Mint gently on her lips. The response was instant as she threw her arms around his neck and all but dragged him on top of her, forcing the air from his lungs. Henry had never felt so happy.

They held each other for a few moments before Henry broke free of her embrace. Love or not, he thought, he sure was hungry, and his mouth sang out for coffee.

Getting to his knees Henry pulled on his long-johns, forced his legs through the soft, doeskin trousers which were still damp from the snow, pulled his shirt on and arranged his left arm back in its sling.

There was no headroom in the small cave, it was impossible to stand, so Henry crawled around on his knees, getting the kindling they’d saved from the previous night so that they could light a fire.

Mint sprang up, her bare breasts seeming like diamonds to Henry and a wave of emotion swept over him: if they were to die out here in the middle of nowhere, he thanked God he was with Mint.

She dressed quickly. She’d seen what Henry was about to try do and, in her culture, that was her role.

Brushing him aside, Mint soon had a small fire going, large enough to melt snow in the coffee pot and boil water for Henry’s coffee. While that was happening, she folded up the blankets and the buffalo covering from their bed and tidied them away, creating more space in the cramped tent.

Mint dug out some root vegetables that had already been boiled and placed them in Henry’s tin pan and held it over the flames. She added small pieces of raw deer meat, some nuts and berries and fried them all together.

The smell was driving Henry wild, whether because of his physical exertions of the night before or not, he had never been so hungry in his life.

As the coffee boiled, Mint spooned out the mixture from the pan on to two plates and handed one to Henry. It was hot, too hot to use his fingers as Mint did, so he used the bone spoon that was still in the pot, to eat.
